Galgo Espanol

Galgo Espanol

This is a medium-sized, short haired and very old  Spanish breed which is
already known in Spain for many thousand years.
At the end of last era Greyhounds were regularly bred with Galgos to make it
a better racing dog but, unfortunately, the origin of Galgo was going to be
lost.
Luckily there was, at the time, a fanatic breed lover who went to secluded
places to find Galgos whom would have the original breedmarks and character.
Thanks to his sharp selection and patience the original Galgo was back. The
old type is smaller and more fine than the Greyhound and the eyes are darker.
Just as all sighthounds, Galgo has an aristocratic appearance. It is a brave
and attentive dog who needs a lot of exercise to explore his outstanding
energy. He loves to be in company of his owner and he is not a kenneldog.
The height of the dogs are 65-70 cm ,bitches a little lower. The weight is
about  30 kg. The small, long head has a sligthly curved noseback. The
colour of the nose depends on the colour of the coat. The ears are bent on
the back side of the head and are "rose ears". The back is long and almost
straight, the croupe is higher than the shoulderpart which is not visible
when in stand. The tail is very long, looks a little like sabre and is
carried low. The backside has wide thighs and the legs are well bent with
low situated knies. The coat is short, compact and shiny. The colour is
yellow brown with a black mask, black or stripedwith a light undercoat,
white belly, feet and snout.
At the present time even in the Netherlands there are some Galgo and atthe
end of 1983 the first litter was born in Zeeland. Because of the small
amount of Galgos, they do not have their own club.
