The Greyhound
The greyhound , as you all should know, is a very old breed. In the old
tombs of Egypt paintings of dogs were found which looked like a greyhound.
They came, indirectly, to England and were kept and bred in the castles
and houses of the English peerage. The ordinary people were not allowed to
keep these dogs. The peerage was afraid that the ordinary people should go
to poach with the greyhounds. A greyhound can reach the prey very fast and
kills it immediately. He hunts with his eyes and is very often quicker to
see something as his owner.
They say that there are three types of greyhounds: a track greyhound, a
coursing greyhound and a show greyhound.
In my opinion, there is only one, a greyhound. It depends on what the owner
wants to do with the dog.
An owner can race with the greyhound on the track distances of 350 meter ,
475 meter, 480 meter or longer as they sometimes do in England. Or he can
go to coursings. In England and in Ireland the greyhounds hunt a living
hare, here in Holland they hunt a sheepskin on a track which is made as
natural as possible. Men can also go to the shows with their greyhound.
A greyhound, provided that it is well brought up, is a very lovely pet with
many possibilities for the owner to do with. One last thing to remember;
never forget that the greyhound is equal to you, not your servant.
