This is a medium-sized Spanish breed which is, classified by the F.C.I.as
Walking Dogs (for big game). It is a half-sighthound. The breed comes from an
old Egyptian sighthound with standing ears, which were ,by the Phoeniciers
- sailing merchants - widespread over the Mediterranean area.
The Podenco is, in that manner, bred on Ibiza - one of the Island of
Balearen. It has two varieties, short heared and rough haired. The height of
a dog is between 60 and 66 cm and for a bitch between 57 and 63 cm. The
head is long, small and has a form of a wedge, the line of a nose is not
clearly seen. The nose is flesh-coloured, suitable for the colour of the
coat. The nosebridge is slightly bown, the skull is flat with a clear knob
on the back of the head. The small eyes are slightly amber-coloured with an
intelligent expression. The stiff ears are directed forward and are very
lively. The back is straight and the loins are curved.
The long tail is rather low put on. When in rest, it will be carried low and
it wil reach at least down to the sprong. When in action, the tail will be
carried right up or as a closed sickle but never totally curled. The
shoulders lie slanting, the sprongs are low and well-hooked. The colour is
red-brown with white spots or game-coloured with white spots, plain red or
plain white.
The Podenco is used for hunting rabbits, hares and winged game. On the hunt
the dogs and bitches are not working toghether because they are quarrelsame.
In the pack there is only one dog and the rest are bitches. The Podenco looks
like the Pharaohound, but it is more hooked and sharper in total outlook
and has more white spots in the coat. As regard to the character, they are
very devoted, lively, playful and watchful; against strangers they are
reserved. They have a very strong instinct for hunting.
On Ibiza they call them Ca Eivissenc. The breed appears on the Islands of
Bakarengroup and in Catalonie, Valencia,Rosselon and in Provence. For
hunting the Podenco's of the main land are better than those of the Islands
of Balearen.
