Origin: Arabia (Middle East incl. Persia) General appearance: Gives an impression of grace, symmetry, enormous speed and endurance, combined with strenght and activity. Dignified and gentle expression in the faithful, far seeing eyes. Various types: Depending on the ground, they were (are) used for hunting at hares,gazelle etc.; on the hot sand of the desert or on the rocky hills. Each nomad tribe had their own type of a saluki (depending on the area). Characteristics: A great quality with unique shaped feet, necessary for hunting on natural terrain. A saluki is well (flat) muscled without a trace of refinement. Temperament: Reserved with strangers, particularly "outsiders", but not nervous or aggressive. Dignified,intelligent and independent, 100% dedicated to the the family. A common rule is a big mouth is the same as a tap; in other words you talk to a saluki and he will understand you. Head and skull: Head long and narrow, skull moderately wide between the ears, not domed, stop not pronounced, as a whole showing great quality. May never give an impression of a head of a Barsoi Nose: Black, darkbrown or liver, depending on the colour of the coat. Eyes: Dark to hazel, bright, large and oval, not prominent. Ears: Long and mobile, fairly high placed, covered with long, silky hair, hanging close to the skull and the "flap" reaching to the corner of the mouth. The light individual usually has less feathered ears. Mouth: Teeth and jaws are strong, well closed lips with a perfect, regular scissor bite. Neck: Long and supple, well muscled, not thick or coarse. Forehand: The breast is reaching deep to the elbows in front moderately narrow, never giving an impression of an upside down "V". The shoulders sloping and well set back, well muscled without being coarse, behind the shoulders a slight "dip". The forelegs are straight from the elbow to the wrist in which must be enough suspension; not round boned. Body: Back fairly broad with slightly domed muscles over the loins, never showing a "roachback". The ribs enough domed, not flat but also not barrelshaped, there must be enough space for the big hart and the lungs. Hindquarters: Strong hipbone, set wide apart, stifle moderately bent, hooks low to the ground, showing good jumping and gallop ability. Tail: Set on low , at least reaching the heel, carried in a naturally curve, well feathered on the underside,never bushy. The tail is not carried over the back, except while playing. Feet: Moderately long , strong and supple, well arched. The two middle toes are clearly longer than the outer toes, never showing a "catfoot". Feathered as well between the toes as underneath the feet, due to the hot sand in the origin. Movement: Dancing and light like a feather, effortless moving forward with a great drive without wasting any energie, never stepping or weaving. Coat: Smooth, soft and shiny on the body, feathering on the ears, backside of the frontlegs and thighs,tail and toes sometimes on the chest. Colour: All colours and combination of colours are acceptable. Smooth variety All the same except the hair. Weight and Size and weight: Dogs 58 - 71 cm , bitches proportionally smaller. Weight depending on size and type, between 15 - 27 kilos.
